What is an Awning Sign and Why Do I Need One?

An awning sign is a unique style of sign that defies the normal shape and function of a business sign while still providing the practical purpose of shading the building from the elements. These signs protrude from the face of the building, adding a third dimension to the façade and pulling attention to whatever is printed on or around them. An awning’s functionality stretches beyond simply producing shade underneath its fabric. Attaching awnings to windows prevents the sun’s harsh light from entering a building, thus keeping temperatures low and protecting furniture, flooring and artwork from sun damage.

Why choose this sign type over another and under what circumstances?

Awning signs are a logical choice when a business needs to shade large windows, glass doors, or storefront glass sections and want to use the large surface area of an awning as a focal point to identify the business or promote its message. Not only does this shading solution protect against the sun, it also acts as a barrier separating you from insects, inclement weather and wind.

A major benefit that an awning sign can provide to your business is the potential for advertising. Your awning can show whatever you like, such as your business’ logo and slogan. Just like other advertising, the signage used for your storefront contributes to pulling in customers and getting passersby interested in your service. An awning sign is a 3-dimensional object, that takes up more space and demands more attention than something like a simple wall or window sign would.

The size of an awning is limited because it is attached after the building is constructed. It can only be as large as the structure it is attached to will allow. In many cases, an awning can only extend a few feet from the building it’s connected to. Also, when circumstances require it, care must be taken to design the awning to withstand extreme weather conditions such as snow, wind, and heat.

Different Types of Awning Signs

  • Fixed Awnings: Fixed awnings are always kept open and are commonly used outside of businesses to create shade and keep interiors cool. Their structures are stable, but it’s important to keep in mind that they can be damaged by heavy wind or snowfall. Fixed awnings can vary widely in material, style and dimensions. With many style options to choose from such as dome, elongated dome, eyebrow, concave and waterfall, there’s a suitable design for every space.
  • Retractable Awnings: This type of awning can be expanded or closed to provide shelter from the sun or the elements when needed. Retractable models are often used on patios or outdoor seating areas so that people can enjoy being outside without bright sunlight hitting them.
