What is a Monument Sign and Why Do I Need One?

A monument sign is a freestanding sign that is low to the ground and commonly have the business or establishment’s name, address, and/or directions. A monument sign is meant to be visible at eye level and are intended to blend into the surrounding landscape. They can be simple or ornate, illuminated or non-illuminated, and may include features designed to meet your specific needs. Some of the latest electronics features include full color LED video screens, programmable LED pixels, LED tube lights, and other lighting effects.

Monument signs are a versatile, functional type of sign providing a valuable asset to your business. You provide a level of confidence with this permanent structure. These signs will communicate to your customers that you are established and plan on staying for a while.

Why choose this sign type over another and under what circumstances?

There are at least six advantages to a monument sign that may make it a good fit for certain circumstances:

  1. It is low to the ground, providing a direct line of sight for commuters and passerby’s.
  2. It is weather resistant.
  3. The sign is practically accepted in all communities and especially those with height restrictions.
  4. It can be used for an individual business or multi-tenant shopping centers.
  5. It can be manufactured with in variety of shapes and sizes with several different types of construction materials.
  6. This type of sign can also be customized while staying compliant with any ordinances.

Monument signs are typically located away from the main building, placed either at the property entrance or along the road so people can find the building and front door. Since monument signs are freestanding structures, they typically require planning and zoning approval and building permits from most jurisdictions.  Because of their relatively smaller size compared to other forms of outdoor signage, they will usually cost less to construct and maintain.

Different Types of Custom Monument Signs

  • Panel and post signs: As one of the most common and simple monument signs, this type typically displays helpful information and is printed on two sides for excellent visibility to passersby from both directions. They come in various shapes & sizes and use materials that are typically lightweight and versatile.
  • Reader boards: This monument type can be used for directions to your business location, as they offer removable plaques for a change of information for your business. Reader boards are a common type of monument sign used at shopping centers with multiple tenants that may change over time.
  • Custom illuminated (lightbox) signs: Monument signs can “glow in the dark” by illuminating back panels and other elements. Many malls and shopping centers use illumination to increase brand awareness of tenant businesses at night. While the initial cost is higher than a non-illuminated version, an illuminated monument sign acts as a silent salesperson for your brand 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Electronic monument signs: Monument signs can also feature video screens and dynamic lighting effects to draw attention to themselves. LED screens are a popular and effective centerpiece of many modern monument signs because they provide full color video and dynamic messaging capability that surpasses anything that can be done with static signage. Lighting effects like chasing or scintillating bulbs, color changing strips, etc. can enhance a monument sign to make it more attractive.
